Comments requested on Shire of Roebourne foreshore management plans

Karratha residents and visitors have the opportunity to express their views on the three draft foreshore management plans that Essential Environmental has prepared for the Shire of Roebourne  (mentioned in our blog previously).

The plans were prepared for Karratha, Gnoorea (40 Mile) and Point Samson coastal foreshore areas following a community forum and indigenous consultation in April, and make recommendations on how to maintain and manage cultural, recreational, resource and environmental values in these coastal areas. This generally includes:

  • Revegetation of degraded areas;
  • Clear designation of areas for conservation and recreation;
  • Improvement of facilities and infrastructure such as signage, seating, tracks and bins.

For more details, please read the draft foreshore management plans and their detailed recommendations here:

It is anticipated that the foreshore management plans will be used to support funding submissions, which will be sought for priority recommended works.

The Shire of Roebourne council endorsed the plans for advertising for public comment during their Council Meeting on 19th August 2013.  Public comment will be possible from Wednesday 11 September, closing on Wednesday 2 October 2013 at 17:00. Comment and submissions on the plans may be lodged with the Shire of Roebourne in writing in person, by mail or by email to:

Lot 1083 Welcome Road, Karratha

PO Box 219, Karratha WA 6714

or Email: sor@roebourne.wa.gov.au

Commissioning these foreshore management plans is just one part of the Shire’s commitment to plan for and manage the region’s environment under a growing population, which has also included the co-funding of the Pilbara State of the Environment Report 2013 and the Shire of Roebourne Environmental Strategy, also prepared by Essential Environmental.

Keep an eye out for these two documents which are due to go before council in September 2013 for adoption.
